What sports did you play growing up? Growing up I played soccer and baseball until high school and then I played football in high school and at the College of New Jersey.
Have you always been a football fan? What was your favorite pro team growing up? Since I can remember I have been a football fan. My favorite pro team was always the Pittsburgh Steelers with Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris.
What got you started in becoming a sports agent? I am a licensed attorney and I wanted to blend my knowledge of contracts and negotiations with my love of the sport. I also thought that it would be a way to make a lucrative living. That’s why I started RSR Sports Management, LLC.
Do you need any special training or qualifications? The NFL Players Association governs agents in the NFL. They require a college degree and secondary degree in order to be considered for certification. They require that you take a seminar on the collective bargaining agreement and pass a test prior to being granted certification.
What are your duties as an agent? My primary duty as an agent is to negotiate my player’s contracts with NFL teams and maximize their earning potential. After that my duties range from securing and negotiating endorsement contracts for my clients to getting them a size 2T team jersey from Reebok special ordered for their newborn child.
Who was your first client? My first client was Neil Rackers, kicker for the Arizona Cardinals. Neil was drafted in the sixth round by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2000 NFL Draft. He took a chance on a young guy from Madison, New Jersey and it paid off for both of us.
What was the most unusual request you had to negotiate? I was recently asked to negotiate a watch deal for my client Steve Weatherford, punter for the New Orleans Saints. He wears a watch during games which attracted national attention so the natural progression was to secure him a watch company endorsement.
Who do you represent in the NFL? I represent Neil Rackers, kicker (Arizona Cardinals, Shayne Graham, kicker (Cincinnati Bengals), Josh Brown, kicker (St. Louis Rams), Landon Cohen, defensive tackle (Detroit Lions), Nathan Hodel, long snapper (Arizona Cardinals), Steve Weatherford, punter (New Orleans Saints), Kyle Larson, punter (Cincinnati Bengals), Cory Ross, running back (Baltimore Ravens). You can find out more about them on my web site RSRSports.com.
Why have you represented so many kickers? My first client was Neil Rackers; the kickers are a small fraternity and they all talk. I recently negotiated the highest contract in NFL history for a specialist on behalf of Josh Brown and that has attracted clients.
Would you be interested in becoming an agent to professional baseball or basketball players? Yes, I would be willing to explore working with baseball players or basketball players. I also represent a number of college football coaches and that has been rewarding as well. My main focus has always been football because of my own background.
Do you think the New York Jets moving to your backyard will help your business? Yes I do. It is a tremendous opportunity to have a professional team like the New York Jets a few steps from my office in Chatham and I think I will be able to provide their players with a unique service. I have great relationships with a number of their coaches and player personnel executives.
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given and who gave it to you? “Do what you love, believe in yourself and success will follow.” - My grandfather, Bob Sohl.
