MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/ QUARTERBACK &
RECEIVERS COACH
Don Bailey enters his sixth season as Montana State’s offensive coordinator. His multiple and dynamic offensive schemes has helped produce three Big Sky Championships during his tenure for the Bobcat’s.
Coach Bailey has an impeccable track record has been in grooming quarterbacks in his offensive system. At every school that Bailey has coached, their quarterbacks have had outstanding offensive production. Under Bailey’s watch, MSU quarterbacks have thrown for at least 2,000 yards each season. The two starting quarterbacks under Bailey’s tutelage, Tyler Thomas and Travis Lulay, both achieved at a high level in the Bobcat program. Thomas finished his career seventh in school history in passing yards, while Lulay became the first Bobcat quarterback in over two decades to earn First Team All-Big Sky honors. Lulay finished second in Big Sky history and among Division I-AA’s all-time top 25, in total offense, and holds most MSU career and season passing marks.
In each of the last four seasons, the Bobcat offense has gained at least 4,100 yards a season, something accomplished only twice previously in program history. Success on the program level has translated to individual achievement, as a dozen Bobcats earned First Team All-Big Sky honors, with four All-Americans and two First Team Academic All-Americas, during Bailey’s five seasons.
Bailey coaching career began under his protégé; former Boise State and Portland State coach Pokey Allen. Bailey played for Allen at PSU in 1989-90 and began coaching for Allen a year later. In 1993, he followed Allen to Boise State, coaching wide receivers and tight ends until 1996. He was part of the coaching staff there in 1994, when the Broncos advanced to the Division I-AA Championship game.
In 1997, Bailey moved to Shepherd (WV) College as quarterbacks and receivers coach, helping the Rams to a 9-1 mark and conference title. Under Bailey’s guidance, his quarterback at Shepherd, finished 10th in Nation in Passing Efficiency in 1997. The next year he became offensive coordinator at Cheney (PA) University, coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers.
In 1999 he began a two-year stint at Cal Poly, serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/receivers coach. At Cal Poly, Don groomed quarterback Seth Burford, who had the 6thbest Passing Efficiency in the Nation in 2000 6th in Entire Nation and 6th in total Offense in 2000. Seth was a 2001 NFL Draft pick by the San Diego Chargers.
He joined the Bobcat staff in 2001, and since then has coached MSU’s all-time passing leaders, its all-time rushing leader, and its fourth-leading career receiver.
Bailey and his wife Lisa have three sons, Cooper (5), Dalton (3), and Wyatt (2).
